It was a standing-room only crowd at City Hall on Memorial Day, where Peachtree City community members gathered to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
“Today is not just a day off work. Today is a day to remember and honor our fallen heroes, our service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, who gave their very lives, serving our nation and securing our freedoms,” Mayor Kim Learnard said.
Learnard also praised the young people in attendance, noting the importance of instilling in the next generation the values of service and patriotism our veterans fought to protect.
During the ceremony, Author Ed Sherwood, LTC, U.S. Army (Ret.), delivered a moving keynote. He writes in his book, “Courage Under Fire,” that our fallen soldiers are not mere numbers or statistics, but courageous young people whose names and lives should be forever remembered and honored.
The ceremony also included American Legion Post 50, VFW Post 9949, the Marine Corps League, Scouts BSA Troop 70, and the Peachtree Wind Ensemble.
“Freedom is not free. It requires courage, dedication and sacrifice. And today we remember and honor,” Learnard said.

Welcome and thank you for coming today. I am always gratified to see the support we have in Peachtree City for our veterans and for the important events like Veterans Day and other activities we schedule throughout the year to honor them.
Today is not just a day off work. Today is a day to remember and honor our fallen heroes, our service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, who gave their very lives, serving our nation and securing our freedoms.
As our keynote speaker today, Ed Sherwood, wrote in his incredible book COURAGE UNDER FIRE, our fallen soldiers are not mere numbers or statistics, they were courageous young people whose names and lives should be forever remembered and honored.
Today we remember their families, who still grieve and who also sacrificed so much.
Today we share a heartfelt thank you to all of our veterans, those who have passed and those who are still here with us.
I am glad to see the young people in the room today. I wish all of our middle school and high school students were here today so we can strive to instill in the next generation the values of service and patriotism our veterans fought to protect.
Freedom is not free. It requires courage, dedication and sacrifice. And today we remember and honor.
